Basic Biographical Details Name: | Alexander Dowell Wilson | Designation: | | Born: | 5 May 1928 | Died: | 17 November 2012 | Bio Notes: | Alexander Dowell Wilson was born on 5 May 1928 in Dunblane. He studied architecture at Glasgow School of Art where his thesesi was on Dunblane Cathedral. Following National Service which he spent with the Royal Engineers in Egypt during the Suez crisis, he began his architectural career in the office of John Melvin in Alloa. He was elected ARIBA in 1950.
He moved to work for Stirling County Council where he mainly worked on school buildings. He was Depute Burgh Architect during the major regeneration of the Castlehill area. He was well suited to this work as he had a deep interest in architectural history and conservation.
In due course, after regionalization he became Depute Director of Architectural Services for Stirling District Council. He was involved in major works on many of Stirling's finest civic buildings. His last post was with Forth Valley Health Board.
Outwith his work Wilson took on a range of responsibilities in connection with the historic buildings of his home town. He was Convener of Dunblane Cathedral Development Committee serving as client for the halls complex which opened in 1997. He also served as Property Convener (latterly President) of the Society of Friends of Dunbalne Cathedral. He was a volunteer guide in the Museum, a Trustee of the Leighton Library and a member and office bearer of numerous other local organisations in Stirlingshire.
As a person Wilson was gentle and unassuming but tenacious when the occasion demanded.
