Bio Notes: William Wyld Mather Boal was born in Harrogate on 24 September 1924. He studied for the diploma in architecture at Leeds and was elected ARIBA in 1952. He rose to become Principal Architect (Ancient Monuments) with the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works, later the Property Services Agency and Historic Scotland. His brother A M Boal was chief architect to British Rail.

David Walker remembers him:
'Although he had only one lung, he was tall athletic and extremely fit. He lived for a time with Iain MacIvor in Fettes Row until the latter's marriage. Thereafter he lived in what he described as an 'agricultural labourer's hovel' in West Linton.

Boal died on 19 August 2004 in West Linton. He never married.
