Bio Notes: Allan Wilberforce Kirkland was born in Kenya on 30 October 1927, the son of a railway engineer there. He was sent to Dollar Academy in 1939 as a boarder and did not see his parents again for five years because of the war.

He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and was awarded the Architecture Certificate in 1954. He was elected ARIAS in 1958. He worked for several different practices before joining the Scottish Development Department where he worked in the Special Buildings Group and was responsible for a variety of buildings including prisons and prison officers’ housing. In 1968 he was seconded to the Bermuda Public Works Department remaining there for two years. He worked on the expansion of airport facilities there. On his return to Scotland he was involved with the upgrading and refurbishment of State-owned pubs on the Black Isle and at Gretna.

Because of ill-health Kirkland took early retirement. He volunteered at Edinburgh Zoo’s Education Department and joined a bird-watching group. He developed his artistic skills and painted landscapes especially around the fishing villages of Fife and East Lothian as well as built highly detailed model ships.

As a person he was known for his courtesy and hospitality. He was a devoted family man.

He died in Edinburgh on 29 January 2017 after a long illness, survived by his wife Hilary, his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
