Basic Biographical Details Name: | George Stuart Gourlay | Designation: | | Born: | 1 April 1928 | Died: | 28 October 1977 | Bio Notes: | George Stuart Gourlay was born on 1 April 1928, the son of Andrew Aitken Gourlay, insurance superintendent, and his wife Annie Smith Syme. He was elected a stuident member of the RIBA in 1950. He studied at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art and graduated in 1951. He also was awarded the diploma in Town Planning at Edinburgh. He was elected ARIBA later the same year. By 1955 he had moved to Wallsend-on-Tyne. He had returned to Scotland by 1960. He subsequently worked for the Scottish Office. He moved from the Scottish Development Department to the SSHA to become principal architect of a group responsible for housing at North Barr and Bargarran, Erskine New Town.
Gourlay was married twice, first to Catherine Love Dickie, and second to Esther (or Escher?) Mary Hamilton.
