Basic Biographical Details

Name: Alastair Campbell
Designation:
Born: 23 April 1927
Died: 16 February 2013
Bio Notes: Alastair Campbell was born in Dundee on 23 April 1927, the son of ****Campbell, manager, Alexandra Jute Mills, but moved to Calcutta in India when he was two and a half as his father’s work took the family there. The family remained there for five years. Alexander returned to Scotland and was educated at Errol Primary School, the Harris Academy and finally Dundee High School. For much of this time he lived on his maternal grandparents’ small estate, Gourdiehall.

In 1945 at the age of 18, Alastair was called up under the Defence of the Realm Act. He did his basic training at the Queen’s Barracks in Perth, and was then posted to Fulwood Barracks in Preston, Lancashire for his Royal Engineers training. He was finally assigned to the Specialised Armour Development Establishment, or SADE, in charge of ordering and procurement of materials used in the production of specialised vehicles.

He studied architecture at Dundee College of Art and was elected ARIBA and ARIAS in 1954. Initially he took a post in the office of Lowe & Barrie, Commercial Street, Dundee. In 1956 he was offered a position in the office of the father of a fellow student at Dundee, William Finlayson & Co. They wanted to open a branch in Crieff and Campbell was asked to take charge of this office. In 1960 he was invited to become a partner with Alexander Finlayson, the practice name changing to A F Finlayson & Campbell in 1963. There were offices in Aberfeldy, Crieff and Pitlochry. The partnership continued until Finlayson’s death in 2006.

The practice tackled a wide range of work which included, besides those listed below, upgrades, conversions, and extensions to many hundreds of houses of all sizes all over Scotland. Campbell had a great interest in environmentally responsible building an interest which remained with him until the last few weeks of his life. He designed the family home, on the outskirts of Crieff, with his wife Margaret, where they brought up their family.

Campbell was involved in a large number of community organisations in Crieff and gave generously of his time and professional expertise.

Campbell died on 16 February 2013. His wife Margaret had predeceased him in 2012.
