Basic Biographical Details Name: | Alan Stevenson | Designation: | | Born: | 1807 | Died: | 1865 | Bio Notes: | Alan Stevenson was the eldest surviving son of Robert Stevenson (1772-1850), engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board. In 1797, Robert had married his step-sister Jean Smith (1779-1846). The couple had 13 children, but only five survived into adulthood. Three of his sons, Alan (1807-1865), David (1815-1886) and Thomas (1818- 1887) joined their father, practising as Robert Stevenson and Sons.
In 1852 Alan Stevenson was seized with paralysis, and in the following year he resigned as engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board, David and Thomas continuing the firm as D & T Stevenson (see separate entry)
Alan Stevenson wrote a biography of his father: Biographical Sketches of the Late Robert Stevenson: Civil Engineer (Edinburgh: Blackwood, 1861) with illustrations by his sister Jane (1801-1864).
Alan Stevenson’s children, Jean Margaret Alan, (‘Mab’ 1846-1900), Robert Alan Mowbray, (1847-1900) and Katherine (later Katherine de Mattos, 1851-1939), did not continue in the family business.
