Robert Ian Macbeth was articled to his father but he was only twenty-one when his father died and may not have completed his articles by then.

Robert Ian Macbeth's together with his mother and two younger brothers emigrated to Canada in May 1914 where his older brother, James, was already working as an engineer with the Canadian Pacific Railway Company
