Bio Notes: James Smith Findlay was born on 1 November 1884 at 45 South College Street, Elgin, Morayshire, the son of James Smith Findlay, grocer, and his wife Margaret Morrison. He was articled to the City Architect in that city in 1900. After completing his articles he moved south and spent four years in the office of Dietmar Blow. He then moved to what was probably a more senior post with Sydney Decimus Kitson in Oxford where part of his job was supervising work on site (?). He remained with Kitson for several years. His career was interrupted by military service during the Secodn World War. He spent two years with the Artists Rifles.

After the war he took a post as a private architect to a large contracting firm. At the time of his election to the RIBA in 1936 he was working for the Education Authority in Leeds where he had been for six years. By the mid-1950s he had moved to Lincolnshire.

Findlay died in Lincoln between October and December 1973.
