He spent some time in Jamaica practising as an architect. He returned to Scotland in later life and settled in Aberdeen. Archibald Simpson was his nephew.
He was involved with building various houses in Marischal Street, Aberdeen which were sold in 1801. The sale in March of that year describes the houses as part of the 'estate of William Dauney, builder'. It is possible the he went bankrupt about this time or was in financial difficulties. He was still alive as he is mentioned in newspapers of 1803 when the contents of his house was offered for sale and his house was offered for let. He was involved in some kind of court case in 1801.
His son, also William Dauney, was an advocate. He was involved with selling off the contents of his father's house in Broadford, Aberdeen in 1803.
