David Alan Lownie was born on 8 September 1872, the eldest son of John Lownie, builder and contractor, and his wife Charlotte Reid. He was educated at George Watson's College and served his articles as a joiner. He joined the family firm and took over its running from his father but at what date this is as yet unclear. David adhered to old-fashioned methods of running the firm, the machinery still being operated by steam and the materials for jobs rdelivered by a horse and flat bed lorry during the first quarter of the 20th century. He was assisted by his youngest brother, James Hood Wilson Lownie, born 1887, though he did not get on well with him. They tended to avoid one another.
During the First World War, David joined the Special Constabulary (being too old for war service) and continued with this until to 1930s.
David died on 18 July 1945 and the firm was wound up shortly thereafter. He was unmarried.
