He served his apprenticeship with Eric Cole & Partners in Cirencester from 1945, being three years as an articled pupil and thereafter as an assistant of 'intermediate standard'. From 1948 he attended extra mural classes at Swindon with Mrs Olga Fond followed by study at Cheltenham School of Art from September 1951 to June 1951 and at Birmingham School of Architecture from September 1951 to June 1955. He had moved to the office of Harry Weeden in 1951. He was fully qualified in 1958 and was elected ARIBA that year, proposed by Harry Weedon, Arthur L Hall and L J Multon.
He continued with Harry Weedon and was promoted Associate Partner in 1963 and Junior Partner in 1968. the following year, 1969, he was elected FRIBA, proposed by Robert A Bullinant, F H Carter and Arthur L Hall. At the time of his elected he was working on a large industrial development woth £2m, toerh industrial projects valued between £75,000 and £250,000, as well as developing a scheme of high- and low-rise flats and maisonettes to Parker Morris standards.
