Bio Notes: Francis David Stirton Miller was born on 11 November 1913, the son of Francis Herbert Miller, a corporal in the Army Ordnance Corps, and his wife Elizabeth Telfer Stirton. He served his articles in the office of Eric Sinclair Bell in Stirling from 1929 to 1935 while at the same time attending evening classes at the Royal Technical College in Glasgow in building science and construction and art and freehand drawing. During his apprenticeship he was employed on churches, hospitals, hotels, mansion houses, business premises and private houses. He also worked on the competition designs for Guildford Cathedral and Hornsea Town Hall.

From July 1934 to July 1936 he was an assistant in the office of the Stirling Burgh Architect. There he worked on housing, substations and the town hall. From 1936 to 1948 he was chief assistant in the Borough and County of Berwick-on-Tweed. He had responsibility for the design and construction of housing, a fire station, mortuaries, council chambers, a proposal for a swimming pool and recreation layouts. During this period he undertook his National Service and served as a captain in the Royal Engineers.

From June 1948 he had a similar post with Roxburgh Council and mainly worked on housing and school buildings. He was elected LRIBA in 1951, proposed by the Council of the RIBA. Eric Sinclair Bell wrote his references.

By 1960 Miller was County Architect of Berwickshire, based in Duns.

Miller remained with Berwick County Council but took early retirement because of the local government re-organization of 1975.

He died in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh on 31 July 1982, survived by his wife Muriel Mary Brown.
