Basic Biographical Details

Name: Francis Henry Lloyd
Designation:
Born: 16 September 1917
Died: March 2003
Bio Notes: Francis Henry Lloyd was born on 16 September 1917. He studied full-time at Hammersmith School of Building and Arts & Crafts from 1931 to 1934, and thereafter continued attending evening classes until 1939 while working as architectural assistant to H Simcock (1934-6), C S Curtiss (1936-7) and A Llewellyn Smith (1937-9). He then spent four years in the office of Sir Alex Gibb & Partners, before moving briefly to that of Donovan H Lee in 1943 and then in the same year beginning military service with the Royal Engineers, serving in India and Burma.

At the end of his military service in 1947, by which time he had reached the rank of Captain, he returned to Llewellyn Smith's firm as senior assistant. He was still with that firm when he was admitted ARIBA on 6 January 1955, his proposers being Alwyn B Waters, A Llewellyn Smith and W F Howard. His nomination papers state that he was still with Llewellyn Smith's firm but had 'commenced practice' in 1949 - presumably indicating that this was the date when he was taken into partnership.

Lloyd was elected FRIBA on 6 October 1965, proposed by Waters, Raymond Seward Laskey and M G Alford (? - the latter signature is unclear). He was still with the same firm - by that time Lewellyn Smith & Waters - at this date. His nomination papers state that he had spent holidays in France, Italy and Spain.

He died in March 2003.
