He attended Cambridge University School of Architecture from October 1937 to May 1940. During these years he also undertook travels in France, Switzerland and Italy.
He served in HM Forces in India during the Second World War, reaching the rank of Captain. After the end of hostilities, he studied for a diploma at the Bartlett School of Architecture from October 1946 to June 1948, which included time spent in the office of G H Gould & Greenfield in August and September 1947. He joined the practice of A Llewellyn Smith & Waters in London in 1948, and in that same year was admitted ARIBA on 14 December, his proposers being Professor Hector O Corfiato, David R Ovenden (or Overton) and A Llewellyn Smith. He was still with the same firm when he was elected FRIBA on 6 October 1965, this time proposed by Llewellyn Smith, Francis Henry Lloyd and Alwyn B Waters.
