Born on 5 March 1920, he was articled to Laurence Kennard of London Bridge in 1936 and commenced a 5-year part-time course of study (evening classes) at the Northern Polytechnic. His training was interrupted by war service from 1939 to 1946, during which he was involved in the construction of buildings in Great Britain and the Far East. On his return, he was appointed assistant to Kennard, and continued his evening courses at the Northern Polytechnic, passing his RIBA Intermediate exam in June 1948. He worked as assistant in other offices during these years, including that of Messrs Hudson & ____, and Southall and Uxbridge Local Authorities. In 1950 he was admitted ARIBA, his proposers being Kennard, Thomas E Scott and Leslie Stuart Stanley; at that time he was living at an address in Harlington, Middlesex. In 1951 he was appointed chief assistant architect to the County Borough of Great Yarmouth. He appears to have taken up independent practice in 1955, but by 1958 he was working for the firm of North & Partners in Maidenhead. He was elected FRIBA on 8 July 1958, proposed by Kennard, Guy North and C J Tomkins.
