Basic Biographical Details

Name: George Cruickshank
Designation:
Born: 25 February 1930
Died: 12 January 2011
Bio Notes: George Cruickshank was born on 25 February 1930. Brought up in humble circumstances in Cove Bay to the south of Aberdeen - his parents' home contained only four books (including New and Old Testaments and a dictionary) - he was educated at the Mackie Academy in Stonehaven. Borrowing a box of books each week from the mobile library, he excelled academically and developed a talent for line drawing.

He attended Aberdeen School of Architecture from the late 1940s, concurrently serving his articles in the City Architect's Department in Aberdeen, for which, unusually, he was paid. At some point during this training he won a travelling scholarship with which he made a six-week study tour of France on his motorbike. In 1953 he completed his course and won the Aberdeen Society of Architects Silver Medal and the RIAS Robert Rowand Anderson Silver Medal. He was elected ARIBA in the same year. (Galletly gives 1955). He was elected ARIAS in 1955.

National service followed, with two years spent in Weymouth with the Royal Engineers (Southern Command Bridging Camp). During a 48-hour spell of leave in 1954 he married Kathleen, a young Aberdeen nurse whom he had met in 1951.

On completion of his national service he returned to Aberdeen City Architect's Department, but in 1958 he moved to Dundee to become an assistant with Johnston & Baxter while lecturing part-time at the College of Art there. He also worked with Gauldie Hardie Wright & Needham.

During the early 1960s he studied town planning part-time at Edinburgh College of Art. A collection of Cruickshank's drawings are held by the National Monuments Reocrd of Scotland and projects undertaken when he was studying Town Planning included Use and condition surveys for Culross, High Valleyfield, Torryburn and Cairneyhill; a study of the west end of Edinburgh; a study of the historical development of Torryburn; a housing project at5 Beveridgewell, Dunfermline; a study of Silver Sands, Aberdour, housing studies at Golfdrum, Dunfermline and Broonhead Park, Dunfermline.

During this period he joined the architects' department of Copthall Holdings (Dalgety) Developments Ltd which were responsible joined the design and layout of Dalgety Bay. At some point he had a post as senior assistant with Russell Orme & Partners. He then had a brief spell as Deputy Burgh Architect and Planning Officer for the Royal Burgh of Dunfermline.

He was back in Aberdeen by 1968 as county planning officer and was involved with many projects at the dawn of the North Sea oil industry, including expansion at Bridge of Don. In November 1972 he became a partner with Baxter Clark & Paul and took charge of the Aberdeen office. At the same time he held the post of director of town and regional planning at Dundee University. Among other projects, he masterminded the development of the Aberdeenshire village of Kingswells in the 1980s.

He retired in 1990 but continued to do consultancy work, appearing at numerous planning inquiries as an expert witness. In 1994 he gave a private address in the RIBA directory.

Cruickshank took a keen interest in matters relating to the profession. He served as President of the Aberdeen Institute of Architects in 1975-76. He was a Fellow of the RIAS (serving as its President for a time) and of the Town Planning Institute of Scotland and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Outwith his work he was involved with the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Grampian Housing Association. He was a Burgess of the Burgh of Aberdeen, President of the Probus Club and was involved with the Rotarians. Other interests included bowling; curling, on one occasion leading a Rotary curling team to Canada and campaigning for a new curling rink in Aberdeen; sailing (he built his own dinghies); the Doric; and matters relating to Robert Burns, for which he became a popular after-dinner speaker. Having come from a humble background himself, he championed the causes of the disadvantaged, and supported numerous charities, including Christian Aid, Water Aid, the RNLI and Amnesty International.

Cruickshank died on 12 January 2011. His wife had predeceased him in 2003, but he was survived by his two daughters Jennifer and Allison, two sons Peter and Brian, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
