Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Stewart Campbell | Designation: | | Born: | 31 August 1936 | Died: | 19 October 1996 | Bio Notes: | James Stewart Campbell was born on 31 August (the month is hard to read) 1936, the son of Robert Dunsmuir Campbell, surveyor, and his wife Ella Rosaline Gall, housekeeper. He studied for the diploma in architecture at Dundee College of Art and was elected ARIBA in 1961. He was also an Associate of the RIAS.
His first job after qualification was as an assistant with L A Rolland & Partners, Leven from 1960-65, moving to London in the latter year to work with Michael Lyell Associates. In 1967 he took a post in the GLC Department of Architecture and Civic Design as Deputy Leader of a Group working on London Education Authority projects. Within the same department in 1971 he became Deputy Head of the Voluntary Schools Division. He then worked in succession for three different London boroughs: first from 1973-77 as Assistant Controller of Architecture in the Borough of Brent; from 1977-80 as Borough Architect in Hmmersmith & Fullam and from 1980-86 as Borough Development Officer with Lambeth.
In 1986 Campbell returned to Scotland to the post of Director of Architectural Services, Highland Regional Council in which post he remained until retirment on 31 March 1996.
He died at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness on 19 October 1996.
