He was married to Anne Thompson. He was elected ARIBA in 1955 and ARIAS in 1964. He was chief architect of the SSHA from before 1964 until retirement. He is no longer listed in the 1984 RIBA directory and may therefore have retired by that date.
Smith died on 11 March 1991 at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.
