Basic Biographical Details

Name: Walker & Beattie
Designation:
Born: 1829
Died: 1839
Bio Notes: David Walker was a surveyor in Aberdeen. He originally set up business in Cruden's Court, Aberdeen in about 1820 but moved his office a number of times, being at 129 Union Street in 1839.

In the early 1820s Walker took on James Forbes Beattie as an apprentice. Beattie had been born in 1801, the son of Peter Beattie, a doctor, and Janet Jopp, and is believed to have been christened on 6 May 1804 in St Cyrus, Kincardineshire. After the completion of his articles Beattie remained with Walker, finally becoming his partner in 1829, the practice title being Walker & Beattie.

In 1839 Beattie went to Australia to manage the Kaawa Copper Mining Company, which was owned by a group of Aberdeen businessmen. After Beattie's departure, Walker took Alexander Smith, surveyor, into partnership as Walker & Smith.

A later practice of the name Walker & Beattie was formed when the son of James Forbes Beattie entered into partnership with a distant relative of David Walker after the elder Beattie's death (see separate entry for information on that practice).
