He moved to Edinburgh as a child.
He worked as a surveyor for the Church of Scotland Mission at Livingstonia, British Nyasaland from 1908 to 1915-16. He returned to Scotland and was East Lothian County Architect in the 1930s. He remained in this post until his death on 29 March 1947. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Francis William, who died aged 7.
