Bio Notes: Francis William Hardie was born in Haddington on 17 June 1879, the son of William Francis Hardie, gardener, and his wife Elizabeth Stirling. He moved to Edinburgh as a child.

He worked as a surveyor for the Church of Scotland Mission at Livingstonia, British Nyasaland from 1908 to 1915-16. He returned to Scotland and was East Lothian County Architect in the 1930s. He remained in this post until his death on 29 March 1947. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Francis William, who died aged 7. He was survived by his wife Margaret Lindsay Husband, three daughters, Agnes Gibson Nyasa 1911-2001, Margaret Beatrice 1913-80, and Elizabethe Stirling 1915-93 and his son George Husband 1921-69.
