In the early 1970s he worked in the Aberdeen office of the practice of Baxter Clark & Paul. He remained in Aberdeen and formed a partnership with Matthew W Merchant as Datum Design. This closed in about 1978 leaving William Cowie to practise independently as William G Cowie Architects. In 1986 he took Harry McNab into partnership, the name of the firm becoming the William Cowie Partnership.
