Donald Gibson was Coventry City Architect and Planner in the immediate post-war period. From the late 1940s Gibson was part of group of well-established architects (including Robert Matthew, Stirrat Marshall-Johnson and Robert Gardner-Medwin) who took the lead in championing the role of the public architect and campaigning for increased public-architectural representation in the RIBA. Gibson was retained as external examiner to the Edinburgh College of Art architectural department circa 1950. Sometime before 1957 he became chief architect at the War Office. Gibson was knighted on 13 February 1962. During the early 1960s he was Honorary Secretary of the RIBA, and was President of the RIBA from 1964 to 1965.
