Scottish Special Housing Direct Labour was part of SSHA but separately managed by Ronald Hugh Mackintosh OBE, who was a civil engineer and an authority on the no-fines concrete construction system. He was succeeded by Roy Davidson and Bob Anderson.
It was allocated part of the SSHA building program, and tenders for this were negotiated with SSHA quantity surveyors and had to be approved by the Scottish Development Department. It also successfully tendered in competition with private sector builders for additional projects.
It mainly built in no-fines concrete at a time when bricks and bricklayers were in short supply and built many housing projects in addition to those listed.
