Basic Biographical Details Name: | Stanley Poole | Designation: | | Born: | 22 March 1922 | Died: | 22 April 1990 | Bio Notes: | Stanley Poole was born in Yorkshire on 2 March 1922, the son of Charles Poole, blacksmith, and his wife Gertrude Alice Ancliffe (subsequently Hopkinson). He studied at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art. He served with the RAF during the Second World War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for his duties on Lancaster Bombers. He graduated in 1953 and was admitted ARIBA and ARIAS in 1955. He commenced private practice in 1956 becoming a partner with Stewart Kaye & Partners but at some point before 1964 he left to form his own practice, Stanley Poole Brand Associates, in partnership with Ian Thomas Brand. He was involved with a range of major projects throughout the south of Scotland particularly several schemes to provide special school buildings for children with physical and social handicaps. He also had numerous industrial and commerical projects.
In 1980 he retired from his practice in order to start up a company designing and making quality furniture in Drem, East Lothian. He had the opportunity to create examples of very fine craftsmanship using carefully selected hardwoods.
Outwith his work, though an Englishman, he delivered the Selkirk Grace at the Burns Suppers of 'The 53 Club' (a club formed by architects to hold Burns Suppers).
Stanley Poole died on 22 April 1990. He was survived by his wife Margaret Moffat Brand and at least one son who lived in Gifford.
