Basic Biographical Details Name: | Gilbert Andre Gray | Designation: | | Born: | 25 May 1932 | Died: | 10 September 2011 | Bio Notes: | Gilbert Andre Gray was born in St Raphael in the south of France on 25 May 1932, the son of the architect Charles William Gray. Whe he was four his family moved to Edinburgh where he late began his schooling at Melville College. His National Service was spent with the Royal Scots, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and served in West Africa.
He attended Edinburgh College of Art in the 1950s and graduated in 1957. He was admitted ARIBA in 1962. He joined his father's practice Charles W Gray & Partners at some point thereafter. He worked principally on the designs of churches and private houses. However in 1971 the practice amalgamated with Bamber & Hall to become Bamber Gray & Partners, the combined practice moving to Liberton. In the new pratcie Gray worked on projects for the Bank of Scotlandand the Royal Bank, as well as commercial projects, supermarkets, workshops and old people's homes throughout the UK. He also received commissions from the French Government in Edinburgh and London. He worked on the Nazareth House children's homes, including the home in newcastle-upon-Tyne and continued to undertake a range of church commssions.
Gray retired in 1993 and devoted more time to his family, his home and garden, the community and his church. As a person he was 'social and greatly respected'.
