Basic Biographical Details

Name: J L Fogo & Rennison
Designation:
Born: 1870

Bio Notes: John Laurie Fogo was born on 22 July 1837 as John Laurie, the older son and second child of Rev John Laurie, parish minister of Row (Rhu) and his wife Jane Mathie Fogo, whom he had married on 25 February 1835. The Rev Laurie was the son of a Sanquhar merchant and a graduate of Edinburgh University who had been tutor to the Duke of Argyll and had been presented to the charge by the Duke on 19 October 1831; his wife Jane was the daughter of David Fogo of Row, Kilmadock, Perthshire and heiress to that estate. The Lauries assumed the additional surname of Fogo in 1845.

It is not yet known where and to whom John Laurie Fogo was articled. Initially he appears to have practised from the manse at Row and their estate at Doune, commencing with an addition to the house at Row, Kilmadock in 1862. His practice probably consisted initially of villas around Row and Helensburgh, but in about 1870, he opened an office at 133 West George Street, Glasgow, in partnership with a Paisley minister's son, John Albert Rennison who was four years younger and had London experience, probably with the obscure W J Rennison. The practice had offices in both Glasgow and Paisley, Fogo being in charge of the former and Rennison the latter. About 1878 the partnership was dissolved, Rennison thereafter practising from Paisley only.

Fogo exhibited designs for a villa on the Gareloch at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1871 but his Glasgow office was closed in 1874 at the latest. He continued to practise, however, the Roman Catholic church at Doune being under construction when he died at Row on 30 March 1878, his will being registered on 3rd September. He was survived by his father who died on 21 April 1882, the Row estate passing to his second son, David Laurie Fogo.
