Bio Notes: Charles Adamson Smith was born on 18 Ocotber 1932. He studied architecture at Glasgow School of Art and was admitted ARIBA in 1958 (and ARIAS in 1962). From June 1957 to June 1958 he had a post as assistant to the architect in charge at the Distillers’ Company. He was responsible for the preparation of drawings for Booth’s Distillery in London.

He joined the practice John B Wingate & Partners in July 1958 and became a partner on 9 May 1961. In his statement Wingate notes that Smith had a 'wide range of responsibilities' and that he had a 'very good design ability and an excellent knowledge of building construction'. He was responsible for carrying out for the design and working drawings on various projects as well as supervising a number of contracts for a range of different types of buildings, for example swimming baths, office blocks, licensed premises and Local Authority work. Later he was in charge of two different Local Authority developments, one being a multi-storey housing development which was under construction in 1969 (worth £3,250,000) and another much larger comprehensive development (worth £13m) for which drawings were being prepared at the time he applied for Fellowship of the RIBA in 1969. He was proposed by John Basden Wingate, John Joseph Gardner Maxwell and William Morris Condie.

Within the office Smith was the partner responsible for developing a high-rise housing system for a firm of national builders which had its head office in London.

By 1994 he is listed in RIBA directories as an employee of the Premier Design Group, Unit 3, Woodliee Industrial Estate, Woodliee Road, Kirkintilloch.
