Designation:
Born: 1960s

Bio Notes: John Basden Wingate was born in Glasgow on 7 March 1908 and commenced his studies in Edinburgh from March to August 1925. He then returned to Glasgow wher he was articled to James Miller RSA FRIBA in November 1925, attending evening classes at Glasgow School of Art. On completing his apprenticeship in January 1930 he found employment as architectural draughtsman to James M Monro & Son, and in April the following year he was taken into partnership by James B Dunn & Partners of Edinburgh and Glasgow, based in their offices at 104 West George Street, Glasgow.

After a year in the Dunn firm, in May 1932 he left to commence practice on his own account at 17 Kingsborough Gardens, Glasgow. In January 1937 he moved his office to Westbourne Crescent, Bearsden, but he closed that office in October 1939. He served with an Infantry Regiment during the war.

He was admitted LRIBA on 14 February 1945, his proposers being James Miller, Charles Ernest Monro and Alexander Wright. He was living then at Millhill House, Prestwick, Ayrshire, though at that time he does not appear to have a working office. By 1950 he appears to have been a qualified engineer as well as architect as he appears about that time as M.Inst.BA and M.InstBE. By 1960 at the time of his admission as FRIBA he was in practice as sole partner as J B Wingate and had an office at 25 Wellington Street, Glasgow. He was admitted on 4 October of that year, his proposers being J Bell, George Frederick Shanks and A G Jury.

By 1970 the practice name had changed to John B Wingate & Partners. Wingate himself is still listed as senior partner with Charles Adamson Smith and John J G Maxwell as other partners.
