Bio Notes: John Burns Yates was born on 16 February 1920, the son of David Yates, gardener, and his wife Isobel Turner. He studied at the School of Architecture in Dundee. He was admitted ARIBA in 1950. At that time his address was in Cupar. In the early 1950s he worked in the County Architect's Department in Sutherland. He was short-listed for Angus County Architect post in December 1959 and was successful in this being appointed County Architect and Planning Officer by 1960. He was still in this post in 1970. He would appear to have moved to Gattonside after his retirement.

He died on 2 February 1994, survived by his wife Margaret Annie Porteous, and his daughter.
