He was elected a student member of the RIBA in 1951. At that time he was living in Kilmarnock. He graduated BArch from the University of Strathclyde and was elected ARIBA in 1954 (or 1957 according to 1957 RIBA Kalendar) and ARIAS also in 1954. He became a partner with the practice of Hay & Steel at some point thereafter, the name becoming Hay Steel & MacFarlane and later Hay Steel MacFarlane & Partners.
MacFarlane died at Deanhill House, Kilmarnock on 9 June 1980.
