Bio Notes: John Vallace Stevenson was born on 30 March 1908, the son of John Vallance Stevenson, teacher, and his wife Elizabeth Wright Thorburn. He may have been related to the architect Allan Stevenson who died in 1929 but John Vallance Stevenson seems to have been born and started his career in Kilmarnock so they may not be connected in any way.

John Vallance Stevenson was articled to Gabriel Andrew & Son in Kilmarnock from 3 March 1924 until November 1927 at which point he moved to Glasgow to an assistant post with Arthur & MacNaughtan and at the same time studying part-time at Glasgow School of Art. From May 1930 to August 1932 he widened his experience by working in Montreal as assistant to the architect Hugh G Jones during which time he also studied at the Montreal Ecole des Beaux Arts. In the latter month he returned Kilmarnock this time to the practice of Henry Dawes, again as assistant.

From October 1934 to February 1941 he was an assistant with Alexander Mair in Ayr. His career was interrupted by war service when he worked for the War Department as a general engineer and assistant to the Deputy Commander of the Royal Engineers. In February he formed a partnership with David Ferguson as Stevenson & Ferguson.

He was admitted LRIBA in 1956.

He continued to practice with David Ferguson until about 1975 when he became a consultant to the practice. he retired fully in 1978 and resigned his membership of the RIBA at this time.

He died in Ballochmyle Hospital, Mauchline on 25 November 1978 aged 70. He was survived by his wife Mary McGrady.
