Basic Biographical Details Name: | James ('Jimmy') Hunter Shepherd | Designation: | | Born: | 3 June 1929 | Died: | 14 October 1991 | Bio Notes: | James ('Jimmy') Hunter Shepherd was born in Fife on 3 June 1929, the son of William Shepherd, paper mill manager, and his wife Mary Hunter. He was educated at Kirkcaldy High School and studied architecture at Dundee College of Art. He was elected ARIBA in 1954. After National Service in 1956 he joined Robert Hurd Architects. During the subsequent years he worked closely with Robert Hurd on many restoration and housing projects, particularly on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and in Old Aberdeen for the University there. He became an associate of the firm in 1965, a partner in 1979, latterly Robert Hurd & Partners and the Hurd Rolland Partnership. In 1989 he became a consultant to the practice.
Shepherd's interests ranged form urban regeneration to individual commissions. He worked on Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and on many leisure projects. The practice undertook much restoration work in the New Town of Edinburgh, including major stone and fabric repairs to the National Portrait Gallery. He was also involved in the restoration of Rossend Castle which won the RICS Times Award.
Though he enjoyed sheltered housing work, Shepherd's greatest personal satisfaction came from the resotration work he carried out on St Andrew and St George's Church, where he was an elder, and the furniture he designed for the church.
He was active in professional matters being a member of the British Standards Institution responsible for preparing a guide for the restoration, maintenance and repair of historic buildings. He also sat on the RIAS Conservation Committee. He wrote two books: one on building comnservation and the other on the use of stone in the building industry. On his retirement in the autumn of 1991 he had been appointed interim secretary of the Architectural Heritage Society.
Shepherd died on 14 October 1991 at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He was survived by his wife Margaret Laurie (or Laura?)
