Basic Biographical Details Name: | David John Stamp | Designation: | | Born: | 12 August 1943 | Died: | 18 November 2006 | Bio Notes: | David John Stamp was born on 12 August 1943, the son of John Trevor Stamp, veterinary surgeon and expert in scrapie in sheep, and his wife Margaret May Scott. He was educated at Daniel's Stewart's College and North Berwick High School. He studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art, winning scholarships that permitted him to embark on study tours to the Netherlands, Turkey, Greece and Italy.
Stamp took a further qualification in town planning and then joined Moira & Moira in the late 1960s or early 1970s as an assistant. He left in 1973 to form his own practice, Gilmour & Stamp with Derek Gilmour who left three years later to join Historic Scotland (now Historic Environment Scotland). The practice had offices in both Edinburgh and North Berwick. The practice's early focus was conversion projects in Edinburgh's New Town. They also undertook conversion work of several factories and warehouses in Leith. However they also received commissions for new build projects further afield, for example the conceptual work for a marina near Oban. In the 1980s and 1990s the practice focused on common repairs and tenement refurbishment for which Stamp successfully obtained grants from Edinburgh Council. He later worked in conjunction with housing associations.
With two businessmen Stamp ran the Water of Leith 2000 which helped bring the ship, Ocean Mist, formerly belonging to the Guiness family, to Leith in the mid-1980s. The vessel was converted into a restaurant. He was also involved with the conversion of other ships into offices and conference facilities. He 'helped steer part of the regeneration of the shore of Leith'. In 1990 Stamp sailed the Motor Yacht Eala Bhan around Scotland and moored here in the Water of Leith where it served as his office for sixteen years.
Stamp was an active member of the RIAS and served on the Council in 2002, and of the EAA. He was also founder-member of the Edinburgh Chartered Architects Newtowrk, which enabled many sole practitioner firms in Edinburgh and the Lothians to take on larger projects by lending them professional and technical support.
Outwith his career, Stamp's passion was sailing and he was a member of the East Lothian Yacht Club for many years. He served as the club's commodore from 1980-82. He organized numerous regattas and with his own boat won his class in the 1982 Tomatin series
Stamp died on 18 November 2006, aged 64 as a result of a cycling accident in his home town of North Berwick. He was survived by his wife Margaret Vivien Lee, a retired school teacher and his son and daughter, Anna, who is also an architect. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | MY Eala Bhan, The Shore, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | | 2006 | | | 62, Broughton Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1980s | | | | Park House/10, Westgate, North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland | Business | 1980s | | |
