Basic Biographical Details Name: | Ian Appleton | Designation: | | Born: | 18 March 1939 | Died: | 24 April 2020 | Bio Notes: | Ian was born in London on March 18th 1939 to Harold and Josephine Appleton. Studied architecture at Kingston College of Art (now Kingston University) from 1956-61. Worked as a postgraduate with Chamberlain, Powell & Bon and was involved with the Barbican. Also worked for Peter Moro on the Nottingham Playhouse. With Moro he was project architect for the reconstruction of the Royal Opera House in London and for the Gulbenkian Theatre in Hull (1967-9) which was listed Grade II in 2015. He then moved to Edinburgh to take a civic design course at the University of Edinburgh, thereafter, working for Rowand Anderson, Kininmonth & Paul. Appleton was project architect for the Brunton Hall complex in Musselburgh won in competition in October 1964 and built between 1969-71. He was also involved in plans for an opera house in Edinburgh around this time. In 1967 he became a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, becoming a senior lecturer in 1989. He was also Director of Studies for the theory of architectural design between 1982-6. In the 1980s he became the editor of the RIAS Prospect magazine and for many years, until 2017, served as chairman of its Education Committee. In the 1990s he was a part time design tutor at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, and also worked as a Lottery Assessor. In 1969 he married an architecture student Marjorie (Niddy) Eunson, and they would later work together in practice, from 1974 as the Appleton Partnership. The practice was involved with Ian Hamilton Finlay’s Little Sparta, designing the Monument to the First Battle of Little Sparta. Ian would later become a Trustee of Little Sparta. The practice was closed in 2005 due to Ian’s health problems. In his latter years he suffered from Parkinsons disease and died on April 24th 2020 aged 81.
