Bio Notes: Michael Shaw-Stewart was born in 1926. He was educated at Eton, and after serving with the Scots Guards, he studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London. In 1957 he returned to Scotland and spent a year in the practice of Rowand Anderson, Kininmonth & Paul in Edinburgh. There he met his future partners, J E A Blaikie and Frank Perry. At that time the Rowand Anderson office was producing a notable series of university, commercial and residential projects.

He was elected ARIBA in 1958. In that year he formed a parnership with Blaikie and Perry as Shaw-Stewart, Baikie & Perry which continued until 1965 when Baikie died. He was elected ARIAS in 1965. Thereafter until his retirement in 1986 he was a partner in Shaw-Stewart & Perry.

The practice's work was wide-ranging, from tower blocks to conservation projects including adaptations and extensions of Old St Paul's in Edinburgh.

Michael died on 4 August 2008 aged 82. He was survived by his wife Grizel, his sons Archie and Hugh and his daughter Helen.
