He studied for the Diploma in Architecture in Aberdeen and for the Diploma in Town Planning in Glasgow. He was elected ARIBA and ARIAS in 1957.
He was elected FRIAS in 1964 and by that date he was in independent practice in Fraserburgh. By 1966 the practice title had become Herbert G West & Associates, with a branch office in Aberdeen.
He died aged 51 on 6 June 1983 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
