Basic Biographical Details Name: | Denis Michael Alastair Shewan | Designation: | | Born: | 8 June 1926 | Died: | 21 May 2006 | Bio Notes: | Denis Michael Alastair Shewan was born on 8 June 1926, the son of John Shewan, headmaster, and his wife Jean Isobel Moodie, a school teacher of English. He studied for the Diploma in Architecture at Aberdeen School of Achitecture. He was elected ARIBA in 1954. He travelled out to Canada with Derry Menzies Robertson and they worked in the same office, Adamson & Associates. He spent a number of years in Canada from at least 1957 to 1960 but always intended to return as he retained his house at 45 Queen's Road. He returned to Scotland and took over the practice of T Scott Sutherland in Aberdeen on the latter's death in 1963. The name of the practice was Scott Sutherland Design Associates.
Shewan was elected ARIAS in 1965 and FRIBA in 1968. By 1984 he was working on his own as Michael Shewan. He transferred to the retired class of the RIAS in 1998 at which time he had not practised for some time owing to failing eyesight.
Outwith his professional life he was an accomplished piano player.
Shewan died in on 21 May 2006 aged 79.
