Bio Notes: Henry Roan Rutherford (known as H Roan Rutherford) was born on 30 November 1946, the son of Thomas Rutherford, architect, Dunfermline, and his wife Robina. Thomas was the nephew of Thomas Rutherford of Thomas Rutherford of the architectural practice Muirhead & Rutherford, Dunfermline. When Roan Rutherford was young his family lived in Kelty. He attended Kelty Primary School and Bell Baxter High School in Cupar. He studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot Watt University from 1963-70 and was awarded his BArch with 1st Class Honours. In the latter year he won both a Rowand Anderson Scholarship and a Robert Hurd Scholarship. From 1970-72 he studied for an MSc in Urban Design at the University of Edinburgh. He also became a member of the RTPI.

He worked for Irvine Development Corporation from 1972 until 1996 when the Corporation closed. During the last three years of this period he studied for and successfuly completed a Phd thesis at the University of Glagsow. The title of this was 'Public Sector Housing in Scotland'. In 1997 he set up as Wren Rutherford with George Wren. They were joint winners of the Scottish Architectural Award in 1996. In 1998 Rutherford joined his practice with Austin-Smith: Lordto form Wren Rutherford ASL Ltd. This became the Glasgow office of Austin Smith Lord in 2006. Rutherford holds RIAS Accreditation in Sustainable Building Design (Advanced) and RIAS Accreditation in Conservation Architecture (Advanced).

In 1974 he married Alison Moira Peebles and they had two children, Ailie, who became an artist and Douglas who became a mechancical engineer.
