He studied at The School of Architecture in Hull followed by the diploma in town planning in Manchester. He was elected ARIBA in 1960. He was a member of the Town Planning Institute. He spent some time working in New York thereafter and is listed as having a New York address about 1964-5.
He held various appointments in the New Towns in Scotland. He seems to have begun in Cumbernauld and moved to the Livingston Development Corporation by 1970 and later Redditch. At some point in the 1970s he moved to Irvine where initially he was Chief Architect and Planning Officer. In the late 1970s he was with the West Midlands County Planning Department which was based in Birmingham. In 1979 he moved to the post of Chief Architect and Planning Officer in Irvine and from 1981 to 1995 the post was Technical Director. He remained there until his retirement in 1995.
