He worked for East Kilbride Development Corporation from at least 1963 and was Chief Architect and Planning Officer there from 1983-1994. He retired in the latter year aged 63.
James Barrie died of congestive cardiac failure at Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride on 6 September 2004.
