He studied at the School of Architecture, Dundee College of Art. He was elected a student member of the RIBA in 1953 and admitted ARIBA in 1955 and ARIAS in 1958. He joined the practice of Honeyman Jack & Robertson as partner in 1962. He retired in 1991.
Rankin died on 17 May 2002 at his home in Dunblane.
