Designation:
Born: 16 May 1924
Died: 2 July 1988
Bio Notes: Thomas Inglis was born on 16 May 1924, the son of Thomas Inglis, medical practitioner and his wife Elzabeth Sneddon. He was elected a student member of the RIBA in 1944. He studied architecture at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art. From 1949 to 1951 he was a junior assistant with Lorimer & Matthew, moving the following year to the practice of David Carr & Stuart Matthew as senior assistant. He carried out a number of projects while in this practice, particularly in the south of Scotland including work on the National Institution for the War Blinded at Linburn. Inglis was admitted ARIBA in 1950.

He joined J & F Johnston in 1957 as senior architect and became a partner in January 1959. He was primarily responsible for the extensive educational programme of work undertaken by the practice which included further education complexes, elementary and primary schools. James S Johnston who wrote a reference in Inglis' Fellowship Nomination Form draws attention in particular to the complex at Sighthill which comprised the College of Commerce, a sports hall and a Technical College. From the brief stage Inglis sketch plannned and designed the buildings in conjunction with Local Authority Architects and Directors of Education. He was also responsible for the working drawings, negotiations and site supervision. A number of assistants in the practice were under his control. In addition to local work he supervised work in Aberdeen, Dundee and Dumbarton. He was also responsible for the commercial work of the practice.

Inglis was elected FRIBA in 1968, his proposers for the latter being James Stewart Johnston, John Holt and David Malcolm Hall.

Outwith his professional life he enjoyed a number of hobbies including gardening in which he was an expert, photography and foreign travel. After his retirement in 1982 he was able to spend more time developing these interests.

He died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on 2 July 1988. He was survived by his wife, Eve Aiton Lochhead and his two daughters.
