Bio Notes: J Wadell Boyd Maclaren was a partner in the firm of Swan & Maclaren who established a practice as architects, engineers and surveyors in the Federated Malay States and Straits Settlements in the 1880s. Swam and MacLaren were themselves engineers and surveyors rather than architects. They appear to have done most of the survey work in the area.

The firm was founded by Swan and his partner ___Lermit in 1887. Lermit withdrew in 1892 and was replaced by J Wadell Boyd MacLaren. They became the 'leading exponents of their profession' in Singapore. They had offices in Bangkok and Penang as well as Kuala Lumpur. In 1895 Swan & MacLaren recruited Regent Alfred John Bidwell (1869-1920) who was an English architect in the Public Works Department in Kuala Lumpur to design their more architectural commssions. He remained there until at least 1907 when he was replaced by David McLeod Craik as architectural partner. Craik who had started in the office in 1902 remained there until at least 1930s with the exception of the war years. The other partners were H Robinson who lived at Singapore and H C Atkin-Berry who lived at Kuala Lumpur.

Swan & MacLaren was still in operation in the 1980s.
