He studied at Dundee College of Art and was admitted ARIBA in 1953 and ARIAS in 1964. He joined was Thomas Lindsay Gray in partnership in 1970. Hughes retired in 1991. He died on 5 November 2009 at Netherlea Hospital, Newport on Tay.
