He studied at the School of Achitecture at Edinburgh College of Art and was elected ARIBA in 1961. He joined the practice of M Purdon Smith in 1963, the practice name becoming Sutherland Dickie & Partners. In 1985 he was sole partner with Sutherland Dickie & Copland, William Dickie at that time being a consultant. He is still associated with the practice in 1994 and gave their address in the RIBA directory.
