He studied for the Diploma in Architecture in Aberdeen. He was elected ARIBA in 1963. He joined Thomson Taylor Craig & Donald in the late 1970s, becoming a partner in 1980.
Ian Thomson, Thomas (Tom) Craig and Robin Donald established a practice in Aberdeen as Thomson Craig & Donald with an office at 59 Dee Street. The practice moved to Carden Terrace a year later. By 1970 Angus Taylor was a partner, the practice name changing to Thomson, Taylor Craig & Donald. In 1979 David Miller was assumed into partnership, followed in 1980 by Alistair Hay and Simpson and in 1984 by Donald Coutts and Frank Robertson.
Simpson died of heart disease on 2 February 1997 at The Stables, Glassel Road, Inchmarlo, Banchory.
