He was admited ARIBA in 1967. He began to practice in 1969 in partnership with Duncan James Fraser as MacDonald & Fraser with an office at 23a High Street, Inverness. In 1971 the practice title changed to Hector MacDonald Associates and in 1980 the office moved to Hillside Villa, 34 High Street, Inverness. Much of the work of the practice is on historic buildings.
