Basic Biographical Details Name: | Gordon Alexander Smart | Designation: | | Born: | 28 May 1913 | Died: | 8 November 1979 | Bio Notes: | Gordon Alexander Smart was born on 28 May 1913, the son of Gordon Smart, shoemaker and his wife Christina Mollie Mackie. He studied at Aberdeen School of Architecture, Robert Gordon's College from August 1932, receiving training in the office of Edwin L Williamson from that year until 1935. On receiving his diploma in June 1938 he obtained a position as assistant in the office of Jenkins & Marr. In March the following year he moved to London where he spent five months working for Joseph Emberton. He was admitted ARIBA on 4 June 1940, his proposers being R Leslie Rollo, John G Marr and James B Nicol. At that time he was working in the Architect's Office of the London Passenger Transport Board.
It was probably after the Second World War that he returned to Aberdeen, where he was taken into partnership in the Jenkins & Marr practice in 1946. He remained in that firm for the rest of his career. He was elected FRIAS in 1957.
Smart was elected as a vice-president of Aberdeen Society of Architects (along with J Galletley) in 1960. He was a representative of the Aberdeen chapter of the RIAS in 1964.
Smart died of a pulmonary embollism and emphysema at the Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen on 8 November 1979.
