Basic Biographical Details Name: | Charles Robert Thomson | Designation: | | Born: | 28 January 1900 | Died: | 1 August 1966 | Bio Notes: | Charles Robert Thomson was born on 28 January 1900, the son of John Johnson Thomson, joiner, and his wife, Elizabeth Wilkie Welsh. He was articled to Mills & Shepherd of Dundee in 1914. His apprenticeship was broken by two years' military service but he returned after the war and remained as draughtsman until 1927. In the latter year he left to work on the development of the garden village at Silver End, Essex for the Crittall Manufacturing Company, and from 1932 to 1935 he was involved in the layout and development of coastal estates near Clacton-on-Sea. In 1935 he entered Dundee City Architect's Department, and it was not until two years later that he passed the qualifying exam, in Edinburgh. He was still in the City Architect's Office when he was admitted ARIBA on 4 April 1938, his proposers being Charles Geddes Soutar, William Salmond and John Donald Mills, the latter writing in his supporting statement that he held 'a very high opinion of [Thomson] as to his ability and character'.
Thomson died on 1 August 1966 at Murrayfield Hospital, Dundee.
