Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Mackison | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1807 | Died: | 2 May 1868 | Bio Notes: | William Mackison was born at Norrieston, Thornhill, Perthshire c 1807, the son of William Mackison, farmer, and his wife Catherine Jenkins. He appears to have trained as a lawyer in Glasgow where his elder children were born following his marriage to a widow, Mary Harvey, maiden surname Low, some time prior to 1833. He was appointed governor of the prison at Dundee in 1844.
In or shortly before 1862 he withdrew from the prison service and settled in Stirling where his younger brother Francis and his own son William were in partnership as F & W Mackison, architects and civil engineers. Initially he was in business at Allan Park as a photographer but by the time of his death at Maxwell Place, Stirling, on 2 May 1868 he was described as 'architect's assistant,' presumably in the employ of the Mackison firm. It is probable that his role was administrative rather than architectural.
In addition to his son William, Mackison had three daughters, Mary a boot and shoe assistant born c 1838, Margaret a furrier born c 1845, and Jessie who kept house for them, born c 1840. They cared for their nephews James and William while they were studying civil engineering in Edinburgh in the 1880s and 1890s. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Maxwell Place, Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland | Business | | Before 1868 | | | Glasgow, Scotland | Private/business | Before 1844 | | | | Allan Park, Stirling, Stilringshire, Scotland | Business | c. 1862 | | |
